There is a wide variety of wildlife in Mexico
and Experience Mexico offers you the unique
opportunity to see many species in their natural
habitat. The Marietas Islands are a 40-minute
boat trip from Punta de Mita, located at the
northern tip of the Bay of Banderas. These
two islands are uninhabited and a special
permit is needed to visit the islands. These
beautiful islands are unspoilt and offer a
wonderful opportunity to nature and outdoors
lovers.
The project offers:
- A beautiful setting just off the Pacific
coast
- A percentage of your money will go directly
into the project
- You will get the opportunity to suggest
how your financial contribution is spent
- The opportunity to enjoy a unique experience
and make a real difference
The project involves:
- Taking care of the wildlife on the islands
- Keeping records of wildlife and visitor
numbers
- Taking pictures of the wildlife
Work on the islands will be from Friday afternoon
to Monday morning, with the rest of the week
dedicated to maintaining records of nesting
sites and helping with visitors and applications
for visitors. You will be expected to keep
the island clean, take photos and make sure
the birds are not disturbed.
Volunteers will be staying in Hotel Peñamar
in Rincon de Guayabitos with other Experience
Mexico volunteers during the week but the
only sheltered accommodation on the island
is a cave. Volunteers will have to be independent
on the island as there are is no electricity
and knowledge of medical skills would be a
great advantage due to the geographical isolation.
The island does not have a telephone or any
modern means of communication as it is uninhabited.
Volunteers will be accompanied by visit on
their first visit to the island by Vicente
and we hope to provide a mobile phone in case
of emergencies. All means of communication
are available in Rincon de Guayabitos and
the next town of La Penita during the week.
Experience Mexico will provide transportation
to the island and there is money allocated
for other expenses such as photography equipment.
You will be working with the office responsible
for the island, which is run by locals, and
communicating with visitors so knowledge of
Spanish would be an advantage in this project,
though it is not essential.
Volunteers are likely to be placed in a pair,
due to the remoteness of the project, and
will be expected to exercise extreme caution
while on the island.
The island accepts visitors all year round
so volunteers are accepted at all times of
the year and Experience Mexico prefers volunteers
to commit for at least three months to this
project.
Preferred project dates:
- The deer reserve operates all year round
and therefore preferred departure dates
may depend on when current volunteers or
applicants intend to leave the project.
Cost:
- £2500 for three months
- Additional months available,
please contact us for details.
- As usual costs include flight, travel
insurance, accommodation, food allowance
and support and advice both in the UK and
from our Mexican representative during your
time in Mexico.
